Drake had a record 13 nominations going into the 2016 American Music Awards. The rapper won four times and swept the Hip/Hop category.

Justin Bieber also won four AMAs, with Rihanna winning three.

"Purple Rain" won Best Soundtrack and the award was accepted by Prince's sister Tyka Nelson.

The ceremony was hosted by Gigi Hadid and Jay Pharoah. The Award of Merit was presented to Sting.
