Kansas City hosted the 40th MLB All-Star Game, a game which was won 7-1 by the National League. Rick Wise of the Cardinals was the winning pitcher while the Twins' Bert Blyleven took the loss.

Giants slugger Bobby Bonds was named the MVP. He went 2 for 2 with a home run in the 5th inning. Johnny Bench and Willie Davis also hit home runs.

This game also featured the 24th and final All-Star appearance by Willie Mays.
