South Dakota Senator Tim Johnson (pictured) easily won re-election in 2008 and against Republican Joel Dykstra. Johnson had suffered a brain hemorrhage in late 2006, but recovered and ran for re-election.

Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin also easily defeated her Republican challenger Chris Lien.

Senator John Thune's term expires in 2010 and the next South Dakota Gubernatorial Election is in 2010 as well.

South Dakota residents voted down Initiative 11 which would have limited abortion.

John McCain won the three electoral votes from South Dakota.
