Incumbent Republican Governor Mike Rounds was term-limited and could not seek re-election. Fellow Republican Dennis Daugaard won the Governor's race easily over State Senate Minority Leader Scott Heidepriem.

U.S. Senator John Thune was unopposed in his bid for a second term.

Republican challenger Kristi Noem knocked off incumbent Stephanie Herseth Sandlin in a close race for South Dakota's at-large Congressional seat.
