Republican incumbent Governor Terry Branstad won a second consecutive term and sixth overall. If he does not leave office he will become the longest-server governor in American history.

Incumbent U.S. Senator Tom Harkin did not run for re-election. Republican state senator Joni Ernst won the seat over Congressman Bruce Braley.

Braley left an open seat in the 1st District which was taken by Republican Rod Blum. Republican David Young won an open seat in the 3rd District.
