The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards were held September 13, 2009 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and hosted by English comedian Russell Brand. Performers included Beyonce, Green Day, Jay-Z and Lady Gaga. Beyonce won three awards including Video of the Year for "Single Ladies." Green Day and Lady Gaga also won three times. The most interesting moment of the night came when Taylor Swift won for Best Female Video. Kanye West appeared on stage with her complaining that Beyonce should have won the award.
