The 84th Miss America pageant was held January 24, 2009 at the Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas. Katie Stam, Miss Indiana, was crowned Miss America 2009.

Before the national telecast each of the contestants participated in preliminary competitions, which narrowed the number of contestants to fifteen.

The top fifteen then competed in a swimsuit competition. The top twelve then competed in an evening gown competition. Two more were cut and the top ten went on to a talent competition. Finally the top seven each answered a random question posed by a viewer.
