German Angelique Kerber almost lost her opening round match at the 2016 Australian Open, but when the dust settled she was the champion with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 upset win over Serena Williams.

It was the first major for Kerber and in the process she denied Williams a record-tying 22nd major.

Kerber won the first two games in the pivotal third set. She was up 5-4 and broke Williams again for the title.
