Fourth-seed Garbine Muguruza won her first Grand Slam title at the 2016 French Open when she defeated top seed Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4.

Williams was denied her 22nd Grand Slam by the Spaniard Guburuza, which would tie her with Steffi Graf for the most in the modern era. Williams beat Guburuza in the 2015 Wimbledon final.
