The TV show "Pretty Little Liars" won six surfboards at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards. Dylan O'Brien won four awards for his various projects. In the music category 5 Second of Summer and One Direction each took home three awards.

The 2016 Open Championship was a two-man race on the final day, and Henrik Stenson shot a 63 to defeat Phil Mickelson who shot 65 that day. It was the first major for the Swede. Stenson's 63 tied Johnny Miller (1973 US Open) for the lowest round ever to win a major, and his final of -20 beat Tiger Woods' 19-under at the Open in 2000.

Andy Murray won his second singles title at Wimbledon and third grand slam overall with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) win over Milos Raonic. Serena Williams defended her Wimbledon singles title with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Angelique Kerber. It was the 22nd major for Williams, which tied Steffi Graf for the most in the Open Era.

The musical "Hamilton" led the way at the 2016 Tony Awards. The show came into the evening with a record-setting 16 nominations in 13 categories - and won eleven Tonys including Best Musical. "The Humans" was the most honored play, winning four Tonys including Best Play.

Patric Hornqvist hit an empty net with 1:02 remaining in game six to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-1 win and a 4-2 series win over the San Jose Sharks. It was the fourth Stanley Cup for Pittsburgh and first since 2009. The Sharks were making their first appearance in the finals in team history.
