The New Jersey Devils swept the Detroit Red Wings 4 games to 0 to win the first Stanley Cup championship for the franchise.

The Devils were the 5th seed in the east and had a regular season record of just 22-18-8 in a season shortened by a lockout. Detroit meanwhile was 33-11-4 on the season and the top seed in the west.

New Jersey won the first two games on the road in Detroit and followed those with easy back-to-back 5-2 wins at home. The MVP of the series was Claude Lemieux
